ELECTRICAL/CONTROLS R&D ENGINEERING INTERN
We’re looking for a skilled, creative summer intern to help design and implement a control system in connection with Zephyr’s new liquid desiccant-based air conditioner system, which can respond to changes in weather, energy prices, user inputs, and more. Your work will range over a number of topics depending on company need and your interests, but may include developing controls strategies, working with a variety of sensors and control elements, programming of PLC controllers, modeling system responses to various external inputs, and more.

What You’ll Do

Design a controls system that can operate a series of pumps, valves, fans, and other devices in response to changes in the environment, user-defined operating conditions, and other input parameters

Help with sensor and controller selection, installation, and operation

Implement and write code for a PLC system

Ensure operation is compliant with industry standards for smart devices, such as ANSI/CTA-2045-B

Run experiments, collect and interpret data, compare data to models and assist in updating models where appropriate

Assist in hardware design and system integration of heat and mass exchangers, membrane systems, pumps, and other equipment

What You’ll Bring
-
Working towards or recently completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field

Ability to work onsite at Greentown Labs, Somerville, MA 4-5 days per week

Fundamental understanding of control systems

Hands-on lab experience designing experiments, assembling, and testing hardware

Good track record of safe laboratory practice

Experience with of data acquisition systems and data collection

Understanding of machine learning basics is a plus

Understanding and modeling of thermal and chemical systems is a plus (thermodynamic cycles, heat and mass transfer, chemical reactions, and equilibrium)
