MECHANICAL/CHEMICAL R&D ENGINEERING INTERN

We’re looking for a skilled, creative summer intern to conduct laboratory experiments in connection with Zephyr’s new liquid desiccant-based air conditioner system. You would provide experimental and design support to assist in technology validation. This includes design and fabrication of experimental hardware, experimental design, conducting experiments, and data collection and interpretation.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and fabricate equipment for our first prototype, which may include devices such as an evaporative cooler, dehumidifier, or membrane manufacturing and testing equipment
     

  • Create a design of experiments for liquid desiccant hardware testing in support of an ongoing research project
     

  • Run experiments, collect and interpret data, compare data to models and assist in updating models where appropriate

  • Assist in hardware design and system integration of heat and mass exchangers, membrane systems, pumps, and other equipment
     

  • Research novel membrane and desiccant chemistries that can improve our system’s performance and efficiency.
    Generate thermochemical property data for several liquid desiccant solutions

What You’ll Bring

  • Working towards or recently completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or related field
     

  • Ability to work onsite at Greentown Labs, Somerville, MA 4-5 days per week
     

  • Fundamental understanding of heating and cooling thermodynamic cycles
     

  • Hands-on lab experience designing experiments, assembling, and testing hardware

  • Good track record of safe laboratory practice
     

  • Experience with of data acquisition systems and data collection
     

  • Understanding of liquid desiccants or electrolyte chemistry is a plus
     

  • Modeling of thermal and chemical systems is a plus (thermodynamic cycles, heat and mass transfer, chemical reactions, and equilibrium)
